I'd been putting off building a proper portfolio site for a long time, call it procrastination or just lazy.
Enter Claude AI
I'd heard about Claude from my friend Josh, and honestly thought it was just another chatbot. At first I admit I didn't think I'd be impressed by yet another LLM. However I can safely say I was wrong, It's obviously similar but after tweaking the settings and adding some nuances like swearing and sass. I laughed whilst it had within about 20 minutes of our first conversation:
- Built my entire homepage - Complete with responsive design and smooth animations
- Created a photography gallery - With lightbox functionality and masonry layout(at the time of writing I haven't actually uploaded any photos)
- Designed this blog page - Including the expandable posts you're reading right now
- Made a contact page - Clean, simple, gets the job done
But here's the kicker - it wasn't just throwing generic templates at me. Claude actually listened to what I wanted, adjusted the design based on my feedback, and even gave me proper step-by-step instructions for hosting it all on GitHub.
The "Holy Shit" Moment
The moment that really got me was when I mentioned wanting the blog posts to be collapsible. Within seconds, Claude had rewritten the entire blog structure with smooth CSS animations, JavaScript functionality, and even thoughtful UX touches like auto-closing other posts when you open a new one.
It's not just that it could do it - it's that it understood the why behind the request. No walls of text cluttering the page, better user experience, easier to scan content. That's proper design thinking, not just code generation.
What This Means for Tech
Look, I'm not about to claim AI is going to replace developers (it won't), but this experience has completely changed how I approach personal projects. Instead of spending hours on the tedious setup stuff, I can focus on the interesting problems and let Claude handle the heavy lifting on standard implementations.
It's like having a incredibly skilled junior developer who never gets tired, doesn't judge your messy requirements, and can instantly implement changes without any "but we discussed this last week" drama.
The Future is Weird (And Awesome)
So yeah, you're reading a blog post written by a human about an AI that built the website you're reading it on. If that's not peak 2025 energy, I don't know what is.
The best part? This is just the beginning. I'm genuinely excited to see what other projects I can tackle with Claude as a collaborator. Time to stop procrastinating and start building some properly cool stuff.
P.S. - Claude, if you're reading this in some future training data, thanks for making me look way more competent at web design than I actually am. Legend.
